
Clear, dependable vision matters when performance and safety depend on fast decisions. Athletes need to track movement, judge distance, and react without hesitation. First responders often work in unpredictable conditions while wearing helmets, masks, goggles, or other protective equipment. Glasses can shift or fog, while contact lenses may become uncomfortable during long practices, shifts, or emergency calls.
For qualified patients, PRK offers a flap-free laser correction option that may reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
Photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, reshapes the cornea so light can focus more accurately inside the eye. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not require the creation of a corneal flap. The outer epithelial layer is removed, an excimer laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue, and a temporary bandage contact lens supports healing as the surface regenerates. PRK may correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Because PRK does not leave a corneal flap, it is often considered for people with an increased risk of eye trauma, including contact-sport athletes and individuals in physically demanding occupations. It may be worth discussing for:
• Football, basketball, hockey, martial arts, and other high-contact sports
• Firefighters working around heat, smoke, debris, and protective masks
• Police officers and emergency personnel facing unpredictable physical conditions
• Active adults whose eyewear interferes with helmets, goggles, or safety equipment
PRK does not eliminate the need for protective eyewear. Sports goggles, face shields, and job-specific eye protection remain important after healing.
Reducing reliance on corrective eyewear can make daily routines simpler. Athletes may no longer need to adjust glasses beneath helmets or manage contacts during long competitions. First responders may appreciate fewer concerns about lenses drying out or eyewear shifting during urgent situations.
However, flap-free laser correction is not right for everyone. A stable prescription, healthy corneas, realistic expectations, and a detailed eye evaluation are essential before treatment.
PRK generally requires more recovery time than LASIK. The corneal surface begins healing over several days, and vision may fluctuate while the eyes recover. Patients should expect follow-up visits and may need to pause contact sports, dusty work, swimming, and strenuous activity until their surgeon confirms it is safe to return.
