If you’re wondering whether PRK is right for you, schedule a consultation and take the first step toward clearer vision. Visit our office in Wilmington, Delaware, or call (302) 515-0700 today.
PRK is typically not performed on patients younger than 18. This is because your eyes are still developing, and your prescription may not yet be stable. Even at 18, surgeons usually want to see at least 1-2 years of prescription stability before moving forward with treatment.
For young adults in their early 20s, PRK can be an excellent option if the prescription is consistent and overall eye health is good. Patients in this range often enjoy long-lasting results since they have many years ahead before age-related vision changes, like presbyopia, begin.
There is no strict maximum age for PRK, but candidacy depends on overall eye health rather than just the number of birthdays you’ve celebrated.
Patients in their 40s, 50s, or even older may still qualify if they:
Have a stable prescription
Do not have cataracts or significant corneal disease
Have healthy tear production and no advanced dry eye disease
For older patients, it’s important to consider that presbyopia (age-related near vision changes) may require reading glasses even after successful PRK. Additionally, if cataracts are present, cataract surgery may be a more effective vision correction solution.
Age is just one piece of the puzzle. Your surgeon will also look at:
Corneal thickness and health
Prescription stability
Presence of other eye conditions (glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc.)
Lifestyle needs and vision goals
Ultimately, the best way to know if you’re a candidate is through a comprehensive consultation with our experienced eye surgeon.
While most patients must be at least 18 with a stable prescription to qualify for PRK, there is no fixed upper age limit. The decision depends more on your overall eye health than your age alone. Whether you’re a young adult eager to leave glasses behind or an older patient seeking greater visual freedom, PRK may still be an option for you.
