The answer is yes, you can. Laser vision correction refers to several procedures that help you see naturally without contact lenses or eyeglasses. The concept behind it involves reshaping the cornea and altering its focusing power. Each operation in this category is safe and effective in helping people with ocular diseases.

Types of Ocular Diseases

Laser vision correction can assist with ocular diseases such as:

Cataracts

As you get beyond a certain age, the lenses in your eyes begin to cloud up. Initially, the condition may not affect your vision in a significant way. But as it worsens, everyday tasks like reading and driving at night become exceedingly difficult.

Signs of the disease include blurry vision, light sensitivity, night blindness, and difficulty differentiating colors. Your best bet in fighting the disease is going through regular eye exams.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes often causes eye issues like retinopathy, which causes damage to your eyes from high blood sugar. The ocular condition mutilates the retina, causing it to detach, leading to vision loss. Early stages of the disease may present no symptoms. Later, you may experience vague colors, dark stains in the eyes, and fluctuating vision from clear to blurry.

Macular Degeneration

Ocular diseases like macular degeneration are among the leading causes of blindness in the older generation. It affects the macula, the central part of your eye that depreciates with age. It causes blind spots in your vision, making it difficult to recognize faces, drive, read, and watch TV.

Like other ocular diseases, it does not show symptoms in the early stages. Later, you may experience vision changes like linear objects looking bent and trouble seeing fine details.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a common ocular condition in persons over 40 and may lead to blindness in those above 60. It involves the buildup of fluids in the anterior part of the eye, damaging your optic nerve. Some initial symptoms include eye pain, loss of peripheral vision, and tunnel vision.

Laser Vision Corrective Procedures

A few laser vision procedures are ideal for treating ocular diseases. These include:

  • Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is among the latest vision correction surgeries. The surgeon uses a laser to create a lenticule in a deeper layer of the cornea. They later remove it through a minute incision in the same area

  • Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a procedure where the surgeon removes the outer layer of your cornea using a unique solution. Next, they use a laser to reshape the tissue underneath your cornea

  • Laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) is a procedure that has some benefits of photorefractive keratectomy. It involves a surgeon using various techniques to retain your epithelium after sculpting it with a laser

  • Laser thermal keratoplasty (LTK) is a less invasive vision correction procedure that uses heat from a laser device to reshape your cornea. Due to its no-touch nature, the technique lowers the chances of vision loss or infection

To avoid ocular diseases, schedule annual eye exams when you are 40 years old and above. Adhere to this even when you have no symptoms of vision problems.
